Sosa ends his book, The Americano Dream, with encouragement for aspiring Hispanic entrepreneurs. "The Americano dream?" he asks. "It exits, it is realistic, and it is there for all of us to share." Sosa is wrong. There is no Americano dream. There is only the American dream created by an Anglo-Protestant society.
-Sam Huntington in Foreign Policy magazine

ALSO
Massive Hispanic immigration affects the United States in two significant ways: Important portions of the country become predominantly Hispanic in language and culture, and the nation as a whole becomes bilingual and bicultural.

I think Huntington missed that memo about how the United States was multicultural...

Oh, ignorance.     <lj:music>maybe this christmas::ron sexsmith</lj:music>

Everyone around me has been complaining lately, so I feel the need to defend my favorite season:

Winter's the season of scarves and mittens, of bundling up in candy-striped sweaters and classic peacoats, of mint mochas, of steaming hot chocolate and marshmallows, of candy canes, of vanilla, of oven-fresh chocolate chip cookies, of mistletoe, of pretty ribbons and wrapping paper, of presents, of trying to find the perfect way to show someone how much you care. It's an infectious, all pervading sense of festivity, with packed malls and carolers and a happy busy buzz. People feel more generous, more warm, and while it's a spirit that should exist year-round, at least we have it during the holiday season. It's when we're forgiven for believing that a miracle might happen, for thinking that maybe wishing upon a star isn't entirely an exercise in futility. Call me a hopeless optimist, but in the winter, there exists the possibility that something beautiful and unexpected might happen, you never know what you might unwrap. Yes, some, unlike me, dislike the rain, but nobody can deny how wonderfully clean the world smells after a shower, or how beautiful everything can be when glistening and wet. And even when the holidays are over, there are always winter sales left to peruse.

...
And it's the season of my birthday, but that's just an aside =)
[I will finally be 18 and legal in a little more than a month!]

oh man now I want a candy cane. I wonder if stores are selling them yet...hmmm...

Why gay people should NOT be allowed to get married

1. Homosexuality is not natural, much like eyeglasses, polyester, and birth control. (You just imagined the penguins. Anyway, penguins are unnatural: they're birds, they fly underwater. Nuff said.)

2. Heterosexual marriages are valid because they produce children. Infertile couples and old people can't legally get married because the world needs more children.

3. Obviously, gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

4. Straight marriage will be less meaningful if Gay marriage is allowed, since Britney Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage was meaningful.

5. Heterosexual marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are property, blacks can't marry whites, and divorce is illegal.

6. Gay marriage should be decided by people, not the courts, because the majority-elected legislatures, not courts, have historically protected the rights of the minorities.

7. Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.

8. Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

9. Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

10. Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why single parents are forbidden to raise children.

11. Gay marriage will change the foundation of society. Heterosexual marriage has been around for a long time, and we could never adapt to new social norms because we haven't adapted to things like cars or longer life spans.

12. Civil unions, providing most of the same benefits as marriage with a different name are better, because a "separate but equal" institution is always constitutional. Separate schools for African-Americans worked just as well as separate marriages for gays and lesbians will.
